Helpful advice and support will be on offer from Bath & North East Somerset Council and other organisations during a special “Safe at Home Week” later this month.

Events will run throughout Bath and North East Somerset from Thursday 22 to Thursday 29 March, providing useful information on issues including food hygiene, home security, loan sharks and safety in the home for children and older people.

To help people who may be planning some DIY over the Easter period, the week-long campaign kicks off in the foyer of Bath’s Homebase store – from 10am to 2pm on Thursday 22 March – with advice on how to deal with asbestos in the home. Members of the Gas Safe Register (formerly Corgi) will also be on hand to discuss gas safety.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is working with others to offer advice and support so that our residents can continue to feel safe in their own homes.

“We encourage people to come along to the Safe at Home Week events and find out more about how together we can help them – ranging from how to avoid food poisoning to where to turn for help in dealing with a loan shark.”

Activities taking place during Safe at Home Week include:

  • Crime Reduction and Prevention – home safety and security advice from the Police and Trading Standards – Thursday 22 March, 10am-2pm: Lansdown Restaurant, Royal United Hospital, Bath
  • Loan Sharks – know your rights and where to get help – Friday 23 March, 10am-3pm: Tesco foyer, Keynsham
  • Disaster Chef – tips for food safety and hygiene in the home – Saturday 24 March, 10am-3pm: Southgate, Bath:
  • Keeping Children Safe – hair straighteners and blind cords (the first 30 people will receive a free heat resistant hair straightener pouch) – Monday 26 March, 10am-3pm: Radco foyer, Radstock;
  • Preventing a Fall – tips to keep you fit and healthy (with the Council’s Sport & Active Lifestyles Team, Sirona Falls & Balance Clinic, Age UK and Care and Repair) – Wednesday 28 March, 10am-3pm: Morrisons foyer, Bath
  • A Recipe for Disaster – alcohol and fire safety; cooking under the influence? – Thursday 29 March, 11am-3pm: Southgate, Bath.

Safe at Home Week is supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council, NHS Bath and North East Somerset, Avon Fire & Rescue Service and Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
