Primary school children from throughout B&NES will be warming up their vocal chords for a marathon singing session when they record an Olympic-themed song at City of Bath College.
A group of 26 youngsters from 26 participating schools will descend on the College on Friday 11th May to record the song, ‘Our Own Olympic Song’.
The song has been written by Matt Finch, former performing arts tutor at City of Bath College and now the College’s Quality Improvement Coordinator. Although Matt is no longer in a teaching role at the College, he continues to be involved with the local performing arts scene as he is the Musical Director of Bath Light Operatic Group and is currently refreshing his children’s musical, Laura’s Star, ready for production in July.
While the Olympic song is being recorded, media students from the College will film the event, as part of a documentary for the Bath and North East Somerset Primary Schools Arts Festival, which commissioned the song.
Once recorded, the song will be performed at numerous Olympic-themed school and public events throughout the summer, including the Paralympics Games Opening Ceremony celebrations which will take place locally at Bath Recreation Ground on 25th August.
Matt Finch said: “It was a great privilege to be asked to write a second song for the B&NES Primary Schools Art Festival. Twenty years ago I was asked to co-write another Olympic anthem for the Arts Festival that was sung by 120 children at the opening of the European Youth Olympic games; a fantastic experience for the children and myself that I am really looking forward to repeating in August.
“The new song is primarily about the excitement and wonder of people coming together to celebrate achievement – not just in sport, but singing too!”
Weston All Saints Primary School Head Teacher and Bath and North East Somerset Primary Schools Arts Festival Co-ordinator, Anne Bull, said: “I am delighted Matt agreed to write a new song for Bath and North East Somerset Primary Schools Arts Festival which this year obviously is around the Olympics theme. It is a great song, very fitting for its purpose and already hundreds of pupils around BANES are busy learning it.“
