Two young brothers from Bath have been crowned conquerors of the Roman Baths in the Council’s “Being Roman” competition.

Bryce and Rory Taylor, of Southstoke, proved themselves as worthy centurions amongst the legions of entries received through the Roman Baths Facebook page. Over 100 photographs were submitted by residents and visitors who dressed up as Romans during the competition, which ran for just over a month.

The winning photograph, as judged by the Roman Baths team, showed Bryce, aged 3, dressed as a foot soldier – complete with homemade shield and tunic – with little brother Rory, aged 2, as a member of the cavalry – on his trusty rocking horse!

Their proud parents Dave and Katrien Taylor said the news of their win was a fantastic surprise. Dave added: “The boys had a great time learning about the Romans whilst making their costumes. The only fact that seems to have really stuck is that Romans didn’t wear trousers – causing much amusement!”

Bryce and Rory will share their prize of an iPad mini and their winning photograph has been given pride of place on the Roman Baths Facebook page.

Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, said: “Bryce and Rory are worthy winners for really getting into the spirit of things. We’re pleased to have encouraged a love for local history in these two youngsters and all those who entered our competition having been inspired by the magnificence of the Roman Baths, which Bath & North East Somerset Council maintains to offer cultural opportunities to everyone.”
