This Sunday’s (9th September) morning worship at Bath Abbey will be broadcast live to over a million people across the country via BBC Radio 4.
The Revd Prebendary Edward Mason, the Rector of Bath Abbey, will be leading the service on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship from 8.10am to 8.50am.
He said: “This is both an enormous gift and challenge for us. It’s a challenge because live broadcasting is always something of a high-wire act, and also a great gift because we can reach into homes, hospitals, cars, places of work and leisure all over the country in the name of the Living God. The theme of the service will be Pearls of Wisdom and we will be highlighting the need for Godly wisdom – surely something our society needs more than ever. Please pray for all who prepare this Morning Worship and, if you can, why not turn up on the day to join in?”
The music will be performed by the Abbey’s Choir of Men, Girls and Boys, and Melody Makers, the Abbey’s choir for children aged six to 11. Pieces will include Edward Elgar, Gabriel Jackson, Herbert Howells and William Byrd.
Peter King, Bath Abbey’s Director of Music, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Radio 4 to the Abbey once again. We have a strong tradition of producing exceptional choral music and it remains very much at the heart of our worship. On a usual Sunday we perform music at three services and a great deal of rehearsal time and preparation goes into each and every service, Our Choir and Melody Makers are thrilled at the opportunity to perform to hundreds of thousands of people throughout the country, and I am sure will do their best not to disappoint.”
All are welcome, however, anyone wishing to attend the broadcast is asked to be seated in the Abbey by 7.45am on Sunday.
