A glass work student from City of Bath College has beaten off competition from around the world to win a prestigious design competition.
Kasia Laganwoska, who studies the Advanced Diploma in Design and Craft, won the student category in Warm Glass UK’s ‘Glass Prize 2012’ competition.
The mature student’s winning ‘Battenberg Platter’ design took inspiration from layer cakes and dolly mixtures. A platter of alternating thick and thin stripes, the design was formed of multiple layers of clear and opaque fondant glass, fused with more organic growth outlines.
Kasia, from Bath, said: “I was over the moon to find out that I’d won. I was pleased with the design but never thought I’d actually win, especially as the competition was open to students around the world and some entrants are studying full-time for degrees.”
Kasia said that the course at City of Bath College had helped her perfect her glass skills.
“It’s been very useful to be able to use the College’s varied facilities and to do things that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible, it’s also been a great opportunity for me to develop my skills and try new techniques.
“Once the course has finished I hope that I can use what I’ve learned to continue doing glasswork of some sort. I’ve got a feeling that I’ll probably be popping back to College to try a little of something else – I’m just not sure what yet!”
Meryl Stannard, Course Leader for Glass, said: “Kasia has made impressive progress during her time at City of Bath College. She is now a highly skilled practitioner in glass techniques and is ready to launch a professional career.”
