The winners of the Bath Central library’s “Recycle an Ex-Library Book” competition have been announced from all of the entries, voted for by you.

Members of the public were encouraged to pick up an old book from their local library and ‘recycle’ it as a piece of art. People then voted for their favourite at a special exhibition held in early September, designed to illustrate the range of items available at their local library.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We launched our Recycle an Ex-Library Book Competition back in March 2012 and since then we have been both amazed and excited by the amount of people who took an interest and the artistic creations that where returned to us for our exhibition.

“We had a total of 54 fantastic works of art – all recycled from ex-library books – which the entrants had obviously put a lot of thought and effort into.

“During our 10-day exhibition we had almost 350 votes – both at the exhibition in Bath Central Library and on-line via our “Bathnes Libraries” Facebook page. The competition was a great way of encouraging more people to check out Bath & North East Somerset Council’s libraries and discover our amazing range of books, CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.”

Every year, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s library service has books that have reached the end of their life; either through the amount of times they have been issued or due to an updated version becoming available. Books have previously been sold at the annual library book sale; with the proceeds invested back into the service.

But many of the books left over were used in this imaginative competition designed to bring out people’s creative sides.
