Audiences are set to be treated to the musical spectacular Singin’ in the Rain from 20th-22nd July, marking the Bath Theatre School’s fifth anniversary.
Packed full of the charm, romance, comedy and tinsel town glamour, the production is one of the world’s best loved movies, featuring the wonderful songs Good Morning, Make ‘em Laugh, and the classic Singin’ in the Rain.
Set in 1920s Hollywood, the careers of silent movie stars Don Lockwood and his image conscious screen partner Lina Lamont are put in doubt with the arrival of the first talking picture, ‘The Jazz Singer’.
Lockwood’s stardom is certain, but Lamont’s future is in jeopardy due to her shrill voice, which doesn’t record well for the ‘talkies’.
Further complications arise when Don meets and falls instantly in love with a young chorus girl, Kathy Selden, provoking jealousy from Lamont who is set to ruin Selden’s future career.
Tom Bright, the Principal of Bath Theatre School said: “Singin’ in the Rain is a fantastically stylish musical which epitomises the iconic look of the 1920s.
“The upbeat, catchy songs are well placed amongst the comedy of life behind the scenes in the world of performing.
“We wanted to choose a spectacular show for our fifth anniversary and it is also appropriate that triumphing over adversity is the key theme.”
The school was founded in 2012 by Tom Bright, Adrian Millard and Holly Rose who saw a demand for high quality teaching and performing opportunities in Bath which quickly grew from its initial 15 pupils to over 110 pupils with 2 schools.
The school has previously recorded songs at a professional recording studio, with proceeds donated to Road Safety Charity Brake, Children in Need and Cancer Research.
Bath Theatre School has provided the equivalent of £35,000 to local good causes and charities over the past 5 years. Its ethos has always been to improve access to the arts for children in Bath and surrounding areas by aiding children to develop key life skills such as confidence building, as well as supporting local good causes.
In addition to recording songs, the school is the only one of its kind to be OFSTED registered and to offer nationally recognised solo entry Trinity exams in musical theatre as part of its standard timetable at no extra cost to students and prides itself on a 100% pass rate.
With critics praising previous productions as a “visual spectacle”, which gave students “an excellent opportunity to utilise and showcase their training in a high quality production,” make sure you get your tickets to see this dazzling show which is suitable for the whole family.
Singin’ in the Rain is being performed 20th-22nd July at Kingswood Theatre in Bath. Tickets are £12 (adults) and £10 (under 16s) and can be purchased from www.baththeatreschool.com/tickets or via 01225 640046.
