Seven Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) workshops are being held in Bath over the next few months, and are proving to be very popular with tickets for one event having already sold out.
The Curly Hair Project’s (CHP) workshops are written by Alis Rowe – known as ‘the girl with the curly hair’.
She is the founder of the CHP, a social enterprise which aims to improve understanding and communication between people on the autism spectrum and their neurotypical counterparts.
Alis was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when she was 22, and is now a successful entrepreneur and popular author whose books are endorsed by the leading ASD clinician Professor Tony Attwood.
The training is delivered by Helen Eaton, an experienced and local trainer who also shares her own stories and experience of autism.
Autism is often a very misunderstood condition and Alis Rowe’s work aims to describe autism as it is lived, not what it means clinically.
As the rate of autism is likely to be more than one in a hundred people the chances are very high that everyone knows someone who is affected. This means that if you have 100 Facebook friends probably at least one will have an ASD. It is considered to be a hidden disability and girls in particular are often under-diagnosed, as they can present their difficulties in very different and sometimes less obvious ways than boys.
The workshops last around 2 ½ hours and are relaxed, uplifting and informative, with lots of images to explain things. Anyone interested in attending an event should book in advance, and CHP workshops are also running in Wiltshire, Bristol and nationally.
Tickets are £15.10 per person (+booking fees) and family tickets are available at a reduced cost. They can be purchased through http://thegirlwiththecurlyhair.co.uk/events/ where more information about the events and the Curly Hair Project can also be found.
The CHP workshops are suitable for anyone including friends, family members, professionals and those with or without an ASD diagnosis who would like to know more.
