£170,000 has been set aside to carry out repairs to a popular road connecting the villages of Peasedown St John and Wellow, with the work set to begin later this month.
After extensive lobbying from Councillors Karen Walker, Sarah Bevan (Independent, Peasedown) and Neil Butters (Lib Dem, Bathavon South), the funding will mean that some of the worst affected areas of this road will now receive the long-overdue repair treatment needed.
Cllr Karen Walker welcomed the good news. She said: “Many children from Peasedown St John attend St Julian’s School in Wellow, the two Anglican churches work together under the same vicar, and both villages provide services and local shops that attract visitors from both villages.
“It’s also the main through road from our community to Wiltshire and other areas.
“Road condition is extremely important to residents, not just to prevent damage to their vehicles, but also to ensure maximum safety on our highways. I’m very pleased that Peasedown St John is benefitting from this huge financial windfall from the council.”
Road maintenance has been a topical issue for a number of years, with many residents raising concerns about it with local councillors.
Cllr Sarah Bevan, who is Leader of the Independent Group of councillors in Bath and North East Somerset, added: “Many people have approached us over the past year to raise their concerns about pot holes and the poor condition of our rural roads.
“Over the last five years, we’ve had success in getting Vicarage Gardens, Highfield Road, New Buildings, Bath Road and Albert/Frederick Avenue resurfaced.
“We can now add this well used Peasedown to Wellow route to the list.”
Commencing 16th May, work will be carried out under a road closure between 5pm and 7am and is anticipated to take up to two weeks to complete.
A diversion route will be in place for traffic during works and the road will be reopened during the day between the works overnight with a temporary 20mph speed limit.
Bus operators will be informed and will re-route services where required during the works.
